KIAZMA at Beleura

A feast of two-piano and four-hand works by Bach-Kurtág, Shostakovich and rising Australian star Holly Harrison.

This program begins with Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s reverent transcriptions of some of Bach’s most beautiful Chorales that confront death, devotion and consolation. Composed in the shadow of his father's sudden death in 1922, Shostakovich's Suite for two pianos, Op.6, is music of immense power and tragic intensity, written when the composer was just 15.

Composer Holly Harrison is one of Australia's rising stars. Her music embraces juxtaposing styles, blending the visceral energy of rock with whimsical humour. She writes, ‘Crunch is a highly rhythmic work for piano four-hands which draws inspiration from honky-tonk, blues, punk, and grunge music. The word ‘crunch’ refers to dissonance and rhythmic punch, and …the percussiveness and physicality of the piano

Lost Dances (Mildura)

After Chopin’s death, most of his possessions went to his family in Warsaw, including numerous unpublished musical manuscripts. Chopin’s sister Ludwika dutifully catalogued them, including the first bars of music from each one. Tragically, in 1863, all the manuscripts were destroyed by a fire. Suddenly Ludwika’s catalogue of incipits was all that remained of these priceless works. Celebrated Uzbek composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky has taken the surviving fragments and fashioned them into an intriguing new work, turning six lost Chopin waltzes into a precious new dance.

Masterful four-hand creations including Schubert's magnificent Divertissement a la Hongroise and forgotten works of Arnold Schoenberg are interwoven in this exploration of the dance.
